Description
The Andromeda galaxy (M31/NGC224) and its nearby companion galaxies of M110 and M32 are our closest galactic neighbors. Andromeda is a spiral galaxy, similar to the Milky Way, but perhaps as much as 25-50% more massive, with a diameter of approximately 220,000 light years, making it the largest member of the "local group" of galaxies. In about 4.5 billion years, Andromeda will merge with the Milky Way, in a spectacular slow-motion "collision" that will reshuffle the sky. In fact, astronomers have recently seen evidence that the far reaches of these two galaxies are already beginning to gravitationally interact.
Andromeda is one of the few deep sky objects visible to the naked eye.. This shots is the result of multiple nights of shooting from a dark site (Bortle 2) and from my backyard (Bortle 5), representing approximately 5 hours of total exposure at 2 minutes per shot. (400mm f/5.6 using a Canon R5 and 100-400 lens on a sky watcher star adventurer tracker). The subs were stacked and stretched in astro pixel processor and edited in Photoshop.
