Description
On August 21, 2017, the United States was treated to a coast-to-coast total eclipse-the first total eclipse to fall on the U.S. mainland since 1979. This "Great American Eclipse" was viewed by millions in the 70-mile-wide path of totality, while many millions more viewed the partial eclipse, whcih was visible across most of the country.
This image captures the moment just after the conclusion of the total eclipse, where a pinpoint of light peeks out past the moon. Known by astronomers as "The Diamond Ring" effect, this image showcases many attributes of the solar eclipse in one shot. The corona (outer atmosphere) of the sun is still visible around most of the moon. Prominences and solar flares are visible on the top and bottom right, at the 1:00 and 4:00 positions. Most prominently, the extreme brightness of the sun's surface is showcased: the diamond in the "Diamond Ring", which is bright enough to generate artistic lens flare in the 800mm lens used for this image. The surface of the sun is so bright, that only 1% of the sun's surface outshines the light of the entire corona by a factor of 10,000, making a total eclipse an entirely different experience than a partial eclipse, even one with extreme coverage.
This image was taken in Glendo, Wyoming on August 21, 2017, with a focal length of 800 mm.
