Description
Some shots are serendipitous, where I just happen to be in the right place at the right time. Other shots, like this one are the product of years of planning.
I had this location scouted, and was waiting for the right combination of a clear, moonless night with some aurora color in the sky, for about 5 years before conditions lined up on an annual family trip to the north woods. Once I saw that the sky was right for this shot, I jumped in the truck and made the 30-minute drive to this spot (about 20 miles from the Canadian border near Ely, Babbitt, and Birch Lake) after midnight.
Once there, I used a high iso, 14mm f/2.8 lens, and a flashlight to light-paint the river and trees during the 30-second exposure. With all the planning, there was still a bit of luck involved...the sky stayed clear (not a guarantee up north) and the big dipper was perfectly positioned above the river!
